Vegan protein powders come in several types. This checklist helps you compare them.
Step 1: Pick the protein source
- Soy: a complete protein on its own.
- Pea: high in protein; usually combined with another source.
- Rice: often blended with pea to round out the amino acids.
- Blends: commonly pea plus rice, sometimes with seeds such as pumpkin or sunflower.
Step 2: Check protein per serving
Look for the grams of protein in one scoop and the scoop weight. A higher number is not always better value, so move on to step 4.
Step 3: Read the ingredients
A short list is easier to judge. Look at sweeteners, flavourings, gums and any added extras you did not ask for. Check for allergens such as soy.
Step 4: Work out the price per gram of protein
Divide the tub price by the total grams of protein in the tub.
Step 5: Look for independent testing
Some brands publish lab reports. It is a good sign when a company shares them.
Taste tip
Plant powders can taste earthy. Mixing with milk alternatives, banana or cocoa often helps. Try a small pack before buying a large tub.
