Price per gram of protein: how to compare tubs

A bigger tub or a lower price does not always mean better value. Price per gram of protein gives a fair comparison.

The formula

  1. Scoops per tub = tub weight ÷ scoop weight.
  2. Total protein in the tub = scoops per tub × protein per scoop.
  3. Price per gram of protein = price ÷ total protein in grams.

Worked example (illustrative numbers only)

Tub A: 1,000 g tub, 30 g scoop, 24 g protein per scoop, priced at ₹3,000.

  • Scoops: 1,000 ÷ 30 ≈ 33
  • Total protein: 33 × 24 = 792 g
  • Price per gram: 3,000 ÷ 792 ≈ ₹3.8

Tub B: 1,000 g tub, 30 g scoop, 20 g protein per scoop, priced at ₹2,400.

  • Total protein: 33 × 20 = 660 g
  • Price per gram: 2,400 ÷ 660 ≈ ₹3.6

Here Tub B is slightly cheaper per gram of protein, even though Tub A has more protein per scoop. These numbers are only an example, not real prices.

Other things to check

  • Compare tubs of similar size, since large tubs often lower the cost per gram.
  • Check whether discounts apply to the size you are buying.
  • Cheaper is not better if the taste or mixing puts you off.
