PPick My Protein

Guide

Is soy protein a good option for building muscle?

Soy protein is made from soybeans. It is one of the few plant proteins that contains all the essential amino acids, which is why it is often called a complete protein.

Why people choose it

  • It is vegan and dairy-free.
  • It is usually inexpensive and easy to find.
  • A typical scoop gives around 20 to 25 g of protein.
  • It mixes reasonably well and suits smoothies.

Soy isolate vs soy concentrate

Soy isolate is more refined and has a higher protein percentage. Soy concentrate keeps more of the natural fibre. Check the label for grams of protein per serving.

How it compares with whey

When total daily protein is the same, research on muscle building generally shows small differences between soy and whey. Hitting your daily target and training consistently matter far more than the exact powder.

Who should avoid it

Anyone with a soy allergy. Read the label carefully, because soy appears in many products as an ingredient. If you have a thyroid condition or other medical concern, ask your doctor before making soy a daily habit.

Taste and texture

Mild, slightly beany, and a little thicker than whey. Flavoured versions usually hide this well.
